Things You May Forget During Your Short Distance Move

About Me
storage units for family fun equipment

Do you live in an apartment with your family? Do you find it difficult to find the space that is needed for the equipment and things you need for family fun? I was having a very hard time finding room in my apartment for the summer fun equipment for the entire family. Our family really enjoys going on bike rides together, but we didn't have anywhere at the apartment to store bikes of our own, so we would rent bikes at the local trail. I finally had enough with spending the money on the rentals and bought each member of the family a bike. We have since used a storage unit to store the bikes and many things we need for family fun. Find out how we have maximized our family fun by utilizing a storage unit.

The easiest way to move locally is to hire local movers. When you are moving, there are many other things you have to worry about, so let professionals handle all of the heavy lifting. There are many things you may forget to do in the hustle and bustle of moving your belongings that will create a hassle for you in the future.

Transfer School Records for Your Kids

Do not forget to transfer school records. You must find out whether your child qualifies under the No Child Left Behind act. You may then fill out a request to transfer and bring the request for a transfer to the department of your school district.

Transfer Your Address at the Post Office

Go to your local post office to obtain a change of address transfer cards. You may also be able to change your address online and have any mail addressed to you forwarded to your new address.

Notify All Utilities and Services

Consider everything you receive and make sure to notify all of these services. For instance, if you receive magazines, make sure to contact the magazine company to change your address. Also, update your insurance and any financial institutions, such as the bank that financed your car.

A few weeks before you move, schedule all of the disconnects. For instance, if you must disconnect your gas, water, and electric, schedule for these to be disconnected the day after you move. You may also be owed refunds. Notify the utilities of your new address so they can issue refunds. Also, don't forget to cancel:

  • Lawn services
  • Pest control
  • Cleaning services
  • Internet
  • Cable

Ideally, these services should be notified in advance, but call and double-check to make sure they won't arrive when you are no longer in your home.

Don't Stress Your Pets

When moving with a pet, you will have additional challenges. Make sure your pet has an ID tag with your address updated. Ideally, a friend or family member should watch after your pet while you are moving to avoid being stressed. After you have settled, allow your pet to explore your new home and become accustomed to it.

Bring Extra Cash

Ideally, you will want to have more cash on hand than usual. You may not be able to travel to the bank as soon as you'd like and you may need money for a service that does not accept plastic.
